['bluːmfiːld], Leonard, amerikanischer Sprachwissenschaftler, * Chicago (Illinois) 1. 4. 1887, ✝ New Haven (Connecticut) 18. 4. 1949; u. a. Professor in Chicago (1927-40) und an der Yale University in New Haven (1940-49). Anfangs der Psychologie W. Wundts zugewandt, gehörte er später der behavioristischen Richtung an, die er in die Linguistik einführte. Er wurde so zum Begründer eines strengen Deskriptivismus. Bedeutende Arbeiten betreffen nordamerikanische Indianersprachen (Algonkin: Cree und Menomini) sowie indonesische Sprachen (Tagalog).
